Harry Potter gathers $61 million on Friday

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1

Harry Potter’s latest adventure has had quite a performance in the weekend – all the fans have rushed to the theaters, paying a little over $61 million to see the (not so) boy sorcerer’s adventures. This amount was gathered in the US and Canada.

The movie has premiered on Thursday in 3700 locations, gathering $24 million with midnight screenings. The Deathly Hallows Part 1 (the first of the two movies based on Potter’s final adventures) is on track to challenge Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight that still holds the record of the best opening (a little over $158 million).

The Harry Potter franchise has had its best opening five years ago, when the title “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire” had income of almost $103 million in November 2005. Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince, the last release of the franchise, has had a $77.8 million opening, gathering a total of $302 million by the end of its theatrical run in the US and Canada. The first part of the Deathly Hallows is expected to make around $400 by the end of its domestic theatrical run.

The Next Three Days, a thriller starring Russell Crowe, has also opened this weekend, but it was not such a huge success: it only had ticket sales of $2.2 million on its opening night, although it was shown on 2700 screens.

Right now, Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows is fifth on the list of the all-time best openings, being beaten by Twilight: New Moon, Twilight: Eclipse, The Dark Knight and Transformers: Revenge of The Fallen.
