11.24.10 - 3rd Alarm; Allentown, PA

Allentown transmitted box 2252 (4th & Liberty) for 418 Liberty Street on a house fire, sending engines 4, 9, 6, truck 2 and BN 2 (Lanshe). BN 2 arrives and transmits a working fire in a 3-story M/O/R at 418-1/2 Liberty. BN 2 has heavy fire on the number 2 and 3 floors of the original fire building. Engine crews fight there way to the second floor, stretching a handline, while another stretches two lines to the rear through an exposure. The engine can't make it to the rear and the tower ladder doesn't fit on Liberty. Engine 6, the squrt, sets up in front of exposure B. Lanshe transmits a second alarm for Engines 13, 14, 10, Air 1, Cars 40, 41, 46, 47 and 48. Multiple lines are now stretched and operating. As the fire rapidly extends to the cockloft, a third alarm is transmitted for Truck 1. Engine 11 is special-called. As the fire extends into the cockloft, it spreads quickly to the right (D exposure) and eventually to the left (B exposure). After hours of trying to extinquish the stubborn fire, two master streams are put into service at the front of the building to finally finish the job on the B exposure. In all, 9 lines are stretched and operating, along with three master streams. 4 dwellings are severely damaged in the fire. Red Cross was on the scene assisting the families. The original fire building is thought to be vacant. The fire is under investigation by the fire marshall's office. Volunteer Mutual-Aid companies had apparatus standing by at the city firehouses.

Rep. Peter King: "DHS Should Be Targeting Mosques, Not Veterans" - CAIR is Pissed!

Long Island, NY - Muslim leaders Saturday attacked as "bigoted" comments made by Rep. Peter King involving mosques and terrorism, although King shot back that he believes there is a "real problem" involving some mosques on Long Island. In response to a recent Department of Homeland Security report about right-wing extremism, King told MSNBC Friday the department "has never put out a report talking about look out for mosques. Look out for Islamic terrorists in our country. Look out for the fact that very few Muslims come forward to cooperate with the police. If they sent out a report saying that, there would be hell to pay." The New York Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY) issued a news release saying King was stereotyping Muslims and that the FBI itself has said most Muslims cooperate with the agency. "We urge elected representatives to distance themselves from King's bigoted remarks," said Faiza N. Ali, CAIR-NY's community affairs director. "Sweeping generalizations about Muslims and mosques have no serious place in national security discourse." King said Saturday, "I stand by everything I said. I consider any attack by CAIR to be a badge of honor." The Seaford congressman, who is the ranking Republican member of the Homeland Security Committee, also said that "right now there are a number of mosques under surveillance by law enforcement agencies" on Long Island. He would not state which mosques or which law enforcement agencies, but said the ...

Classical Series - Rachmaninoff's 2nd Piano Concerto and Eric Carmen's "All By Myself."

The Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, Op. 18, is a concerto for piano and orchestra composed by Sergei Rachmaninoff between the autumn of 1900 and April 1901. The second and third movements were first performed with the composer as soloist on 2 December 1900.[2] The complete work was premiered, again with the composer as soloist, on 27 October 1901, with his cousin Alexander Siloti conducting. This piece is one of Rachmaninoff's most enduringly popular pieces, and established his fame as a concerto composer At its 1897 premiere, Rachmaninoff's first symphony, though now considered a significant achievement, was derided by contemporary critics. Compounded by problems in his personal life, Rachmaninoff fell into a depression that lasted for several years. His second piano concerto confirmed his recovery from clinical depression and writer's block. The concerto was dedicated to Nikolai Dahl, a physician who had done much to restore Rachmaninoff's self-confidence. For more information, please visit - en.wikipedia.org "All by Myself" is a power ballad written and performed by Eric Carmen in 1975. The verse borrows heavily from the second movement (Adagio Sostenuto) of Sergei Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, Opus 18, which Carmen believed was in the public domain. Having found it was not only after the record had been issued, Carmen had to come to an agreement with the Rachmaninoff estate. Early versions, therefore, only give writing credit to Carmen while later ...

Apple's iPad is Huge as Radio Device: NPR has 300K Apps Downloaded, CEO Vivian Schiller

www.beet.tv LOS ANGELES -- With 300000 downloads, NPR is one of the most popular Apps for news and is demonstrating the popularity of radio on the iPad. With some 2 million sold, we reckon that 15 percent of users have National Public Radio on the new Apple device. The latest numbers were shared with Beet.TV in this interview by Vivian Schiller, President and CEO of NPR. We spoke with her Wednesday at the All Things Digital conference where she was a feature speaker. The NPR App has been popular since the introduction of the iPad. Back in April, The Wall Street Journal's Shira Ovide wrote that three days after launch, 10 percent of iPad owners were downloading the NPR App. Also in this interview, Vivian speaks about the state of journalism and offers her take on the upcoming "paywall" at The New York Times. Before joining NPR, she was general manager of the NYTimes.com. New York Times has 350k iPad Apps Downloaded in One Week Meanwhile at The Times, the new iPad App has been downloaded 350000 since it was introduced on June 1, a spokeswoman told us today. A spokesperson for The Wall Street Journal told us that downloads of the paper's iPad App are brisk, and says that there are at least 100000 "active" users of the App, which she says gives a better "sense of usage." A published report in England says that the Financial Times has had 130000 downloads since it was introduced two weeks ago. Over at paidContent, David Kaplan reports that Esquire magazine has had 100K iPad ...

Al Jolson and the Jews

Award-winning author Michael Alexander explored Jewish identity for Al Jolson, Felix Frankfurter and Arnold Rothstein in a talk titled "Mammy, Don't Ya Know Me?" at the USC Casden Institute for the Study of the Jewish Role in American Life on January 30, 2008. By the 1920s, Jews were -- by all economic, political and cultural measures of the day -- making it in America. Yet many deliberately identified with groups that remained marginalized. Alexander, author of the National Jewish Book Award-winning "Jazz Age Jews" (2003), tells the stories of Al Jolson, Felix Frankfurter and Arnold Rothstein. The gangster accused of fixing the 1919 World Series (Rothstein); the defending lawyer for the infamous Sacco and Vanzetti murder trial, who went on to become a Supreme Court justice (Frankfurter); and the star of the first talkie (Jolson) all became heroes to the American Jewish community for their association with events that galvanized the country and defined the Jazz Age. Alexander's book pulls together from the threads of their lives a theological explanation of 1920s Jews, who thought of themselves as outsiders no matter how successful they became. Michael Alexander is the Murray Friedman Professor of History and director of the Myer and Rosaline Feinstein Center for American Jewish History at Temple University. Established in memory of USC alumnus Burton Lewis, the Burton Lewis Lecture Series focuses on the Jewish role in arts and culture -- a topic of great interest and ...
